Cookie Policy

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help us remember your preferences, keep you logged in, and understand how you use Recipe Manager so we can improve the experience.

1. Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are essential for Recipe Manager to function. They cannot be disabled. No consent is required for these cookies under ePrivacy and GDPR regulations.

CookiePurpose
sb-*-auth-tokenAuthentication and session management. Keeps you securely logged in across page loads.
NEXT_LOCALEStores your preferred language (English or Spanish) so the app loads in the right language every time.
themeLocal storage entry (not a cookie) holding your light/dark theme preference to avoid a flash of unstyled content on load. Never leaves your device.
cookie-consentRecords your cookie preference choice so we do not show the banner again. Expires after 365 days.

2. Optional Cookies (Require Consent)

These cookies are only set after you explicitly opt in via the cookie consent banner. You can change your preference at any time.

Analytics (PostHog)

We use PostHog to understand usage patterns and page views in aggregate — which features are popular, where users encounter problems, and how to prioritize improvements. PostHog only starts after you choose "Accept All". Analytics data is processed on PostHog's United States infrastructure (us.i.posthog.com) and retained under our PostHog project's data-retention settings. Session recording (screen replay) is disabled — we do not record your screen or keystrokes.

  • ph_phc_* PostHog cookie that distinguishes unique visitors and sessions. Expires after 1 year.
  • ph_phc_*_posthog (local storage)Stores the anonymous device identifier ($device_id) and event queue state on your device.

If you withdraw consent (via "Cookie settings" below), analytics capture stops and these cookies and local-storage entries are deleted from your browser.

Experiments (A/B Testing)

With your analytics consent we also set one first-party cookie to keep product experiments consistent between visits:

  • rm_anonRandom anonymous identifier used to show you the same variant of an experiment (for example, a pricing headline test) on every visit. Expires after 1 year. It is not set if you choose "Necessary Only", and no experiment assignments are stored server-side without your consent.

Performance Cookies

Vercel Speed Insights and Sentry collect anonymized performance data including page load times, navigation timing, and JavaScript error tracking. This data helps us detect and fix performance regressions and runtime errors.

3. Chrome Extension

The Recipe Manager Chrome extension helps you import recipes from retailer websites including Walmart, Costco, BJs, and Aldi. Here is how the extension handles data:

  • The extension only activates on the specific retailer domains you are browsing (walmart.com, costco.com, bjs.com, aldi.us) and only when you actively click the extension to import a recipe.
  • It reads recipe data (title, ingredients, instructions) from the current page and sends it to Recipe Manager for processing. It does not read or modify any other data on those pages.
  • The extension does not perform cross-site tracking, set advertising cookies, or collect browsing history.
  • No data is shared with third-party advertisers or data brokers through the extension.

4. Managing Your Cookies

You have full control over cookies on Recipe Manager:

Via Our Cookie Banner

When you first visit Recipe Manager, you will see a cookie consent banner at the bottom of the page. Choose "Accept All" to enable analytics, or "Necessary Only" to use only essential cookies. Your preference is stored in the cookie-consent cookie and persists across sessions.

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time: — this clears your saved choice, stops analytics immediately, deletes analytics cookies from your browser, and reopens the consent banner. The same link is available in the site footer.

Via Your Browser Settings

Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies through their settings. Common paths:

  • Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies
Note: Disabling strictly necessary cookies will prevent Recipe Manager from functioning correctly. You may not be able to log in or maintain your session. We recommend leaving essential cookies enabled.

5. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when we add or remove cookies. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date at the top. For significant changes, we will notify you via the cookie banner or email.
